Great Russian women-writers

Nadezhda Teffi, a Russian humorist writer.

Nadezhda Teffi Teffi is a pen name of Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Lokhvitskaya after her marriage Nadezhda Alexandrovna Buchinskaya. She started her career as a poet but quicky felt a calling to wrinting short comc stories. This is the form with wich her name is inseparably associated. Together with Arkady Timofeevich Averchenko she was one of the most prominent authors of the Satiricon magazine .

Teffi was largely popular throughout pre-Revolutionary Russia. Nikolas II was her fan and there were even brands parfumes named for her.

Like many other St-Petersburg writes, she welcomed February Reviolution but but could not stand the Bolsheviks. She emigrared in 1919 and continued her literary career as a chronicler of Russian Paris. Practically everything she wrote was published in newspapers.

Teffi is regarded as the foremost chronicler of Russian emigre life in Paris in the years following the 1917 Revolution. Her sharply comic tales feature Field Marshals reduced to driving taxicabs, ex-noblewomen dressing up as gypsies to serve tea in cafes, and other castaway members of Russia's former elite, all of whom absurdly cling to the affectations of their old way of life. Because she satirized the aimlessness and sterility of Russian life in exile, Teffi was one of the very few emigre writers whose work was published in the Soviet Union.

A collection of her best tales, "All About Love", was published in 1985 and translated into several languages.

Teffi died in emigration. She is buried at Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois Russian Cemetery in France.
